Explore the process overview below to see how our technology supports every step of water and wastewater treatment.

Water & Wastewater Treatment Plant Process Overview

Wastewater treatment methods vary greatly for many reasons. The volume and composition of the sludge in the influent, as well as how the sludge residue will be disposed of, all dictate design aspects of the plant.

A large volume of wastewater will preclude a simple batch system that might be appropriate for a smaller scale treatment facility. Sludge with low potassium or phosphorus content or loaded with heavy metals would not be suitable for land application.

Wastewater treatment plants allow solids to settle out and the remaining organic matter is broken down by microorganisms. Each area of the plant has a specific function.

At its core, wastewater treatment allows solids to settle and microorganisms to break down organic matter. Each stage of the plant plays a critical role:

  • Screening & Grit Removal: Raw wastewater passes through bar screens to remove large solids, followed by grit chambers where sand and other non-biodegradable materials settle.
  • Comminution: Grinding pumps shred remaining solids for easier biological breakdown.
  • Aeration: Oxygen is introduced in aeration chambers, enabling microorganisms to consume organic matter and reduce biochemical oxygen demand (B.O.D.). HOFFMAN & LAMSON blowers for wastewater supply the air that keeps microbes active and suspended.
  • Clarification: After aeration, water enters sedimentation tanks where sludge flocs settle. Some sludge returns to aeration for seeding; the rest moves to holding basins for activation.
  • Filtration & Backwashing: Sand filters polish the water, and Hoffman & Lamson blowers backwash filters to maintain efficiency.
  • Sludge Handling: Activated sludge can be used as soil conditioner, landfilled, or incinerated. Our blowers support fluidized bed incinerators for efficient combustion.
  • Disinfection: Chlorine treatment eliminates pathogens before water is safely discharged.
